Worm composting: a practical and effective way to reduce waste and pollution

Been waiting for a while to make a post this amazingness. Kitchen waste to vermiculture to compost! Nothing new. A worm compost is an environmentally friendly method of recycling kitchen and garden waste and your papers and boxes etc.  Composting worms are used to convert  organic waste into a nutrient rich compost and concentrated liquid fertiliser.

There is no general recycling system here in Nigeria as far as i know so, Instead of throwing everything in your bin, having wet, stinky bins, maggots overflowing, making garbage sorting harder and increasing landfill waste, polluting landfills including the streets, this way everyone can recycle, reduce waste and pollution and also self sufficiently possibly plant something and green up their environment if they want. its a great way to build soil..if you care,  for the earth which is being depleted everyday. Putting everything into one bin doesnt make sense and is messy.

This is a worm compost I manage. Actually i dont even manage it. Its the worms that manage it and do all the work of turning the waste to soil. I just feed the worms the waste. All kitchen waste from leftovers, peelings/skins, spoilt food etc which is the green material responsible for nitrogen, is dumped here everyday and layered with cardboard, newspapers and a few other brown/garden waste material like shredded branches, wood, dead leaves for carbon content and so on to balance the carbon and nitrogen content.

You can do this at the back of your house, garden, farm, in a Small container , a built up wooden or concrete space, anything is posssible. As long as you keep topping it up, checking it have good drainage at the bottom(holes) and keep it covered all should be well. Get some good soil and a few worms to start off with and they will multiply, turn your food and garden waste into soil and enrich it as well. There could be the issue of other animals..or pests as we call them but will address in another post. It could also be a way to feed wildlife(another talk for another day. There is more to say about worms and composting so I will revisit this and possibly make a video when i am ready. #compost #sustainability #waste #green #organic #biodynamic #wormcompost #vermiculture #darkmatter #zerowaste
